Going Green, Going Global
Sahuarita Christian Academy plans major expansion.
"Sahuarita Christian Academy is going green and going global," says Executive
Director David Lyon. The academy, at 2285 E. Sahuarita Road, is set to
begin construction next month on its 34,000-square-foot, two-story, "green"
school building.

The school will cost an estimated $5 million to build, though
concessions from the companies whittle the school's portion down to $1 million,
says Lyon. As a private, non-profit organization without ties to a church
base, they are asking for the public's help in funding the construction.
Lyon is looking for sponsors willing to "purchase" one square foot of the
34,000-square-foot building for $35. The names of the sponsors will go on
a wall at the front of the new building, under the verse: "...with God all
things are possible."

What better way to invest in the future of our country, he
thought than in our children. David Lyon's dream became a reality when he
founded SCA as a non-profit, open enrollment, non discriminatory private K-12 school.
Children from all walks of life from Pima County can become students at SCA.
No child is ever turned away for lack of funds. The Town of Sahuarita and
many "green" businesses across the country and internationally have picked up
the SCA banner with Lyon, contributing materials, offering advice and
encouragement for the project.

Lyon knew the school needed a larger facility after its
enrollment increased from 27 last August, when the school opened, to about 170
in May, he said. Classes were previously held in a modular building with
two classrooms. Sahuarita Christian Academy is hoping its new school
building will attain a silver certification from the Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design Green Building Rating System.

CEMEX, of Monterrey, Mexico, Greenblock and ICW who are both
German owned, convinced Lyon that building "green" made better sense, both from
a cost stand point and that building "green" provided the best environment
for SCA students and faculty. Lyon stated, "This decision to build a
"green" K-12 building was the right decision for us to make." "It became
clear to me that it presented a win-win situation for everyone involved."

SCA Will Now Be Seeking LEED

Green Building Plans
Green Building Partners
Due to SCA’s rapid growth in enrollment, SCA
now finds itself in need of a large K-12 school building. To date God has made the
impossible happen many times and in numerous areas for SCA, now SCA finds itself
at yet another crossroad. The doors of opportunity have opened up
for SCA to be able to build a “Green”, 34,000 sq. ft., two-story, K-12 school
building at approximately less than 25% of the normal construction cost.
However, at a normal building cost of $150 per sq. ft. the new building would
cost SCA $5.1 million. However, to date SCA has several international,
national, regional and local green manufacturer’s and contractor’s who are
offering to help SCA build its new green school building. With the help of
these partners SCA is estimating its portion of the building cost to be $35 (or
less) per sq. ft. or less than $1.2 million.
In the first phase, SCA has received to date about $70,000 in donations for the
new building and has been moving forward with the development plan in
cooperation with the Town of Sahuarita. SCA continues to expand its manufacturer and contractor relationships, municipality coordination,
architectural and engineering relationships. With the funds
received to date SCA believes it can complete all of the design, development
plan and permitting
processes.
For the second
phase, SCA is estimating that it will need
approximately $325,000. The second phase consists of the construction of
the excavation, the cement foundation, ICF walls, galvanized steel trusses, installation
of exterior windows &
doors, synthetic stucco and roof coating which will complete the shell of the two-story green school building.

SCA Purpose
The purpose of Sahuarita
Christian Academy is a God-given ministry to lead young people to Christ and
train them in the Bible, Christian character, language, and traditional subject
matter. Today's students need to be taught the accumulated wisdom of the
past from Gods point of view and trained in the way they should go (Proverbs
22:6) so they will have a firm foundation from which to evaluate the present and
make proper decisions for the future.
At Sahuarita Christian Academy, academic and
spiritual standards are high with added emphasis on patriotism and character
training.
"We thank God, that we live in a country that allows us to have a private
Christian school. A place where we can display God's 10 Commandments on
the walls of our school, start each school day with a pledge to the Holy Bible,
the Christian flag and the American flag. Where prayer is a common part of
our daily school day, with opening prayer before school and closing prayer after
school. A school
that has the Holy Bible as its core basis for all learning and where Science is
taught according to the Bible as God's creationism rather than from the ideas of
evolutionism." David Lyon, Executive
Director
